Tracking salads to the minute, but not the people making them
Johma produces fresh salads at scale. The systems tracking each batch – production times, destinations, quantities – are exceptional. The systems tracking the people producing them were not.

“We simply weren’t in a position to demonstrate that the personnel producing those salads had received the proper training,” said Daniël van der Woude, Innovation Manager at Johma. “We didn’t have the right systems in place.”
A process that fell apart the moment someone was busy
Skills records lived in Excel spreadsheets fed by a weekly manual export from the e-learning system. Every step was manual, every step was error-prone, and when nobody was available to do it, it didn’t get done.
I no longer have discussions where I’m asking myself or others who’s trained for what and when. We used to waste hours working this out whenever a member of the management team asked us for this information.

Access denied until training is complete
Temporary staff now complete onboarding on the spot. It takes five minutes, right there and then, and only after completion does their entry pass activate.
Johma is extending the same logic to machinery. A dangerous cutting machine, for example, will simply be unable to switch on if the operator hasn’t completed the required training in AG5.
We can assess proficiency levels on the job, more quickly and more easily than ever before. Our trainers can do this using the app on their smartphones or tablets. You wouldn’t believe how many work hours this is saving us.

The audit questions that used to consume hours of management time – discerning who is trained for what, and when – now takes seconds.
“Nowadays, I can see if anyone’s made a mistake in a single mouse click. You can see where someone is assigned, all the operating and training standards, who’s been audited, who passed, who didn’t,” van der Woude said.
